Project 1: Beauty of Traditional Craft Villages Contest

Statistics indicate that Vietnam has almost 2,000 craft villages of such main groups of craftsmanship such as: lacquer, ceramics & pottery, gold and silversmithing, lace embroidery, weaving of bamboo, rattan, and papyrus, textile weaving, papermaking, folk paintings, wood and stone arts… Products of these craft villages can tell priceless stories about the national culture ‘s uniqueness through drawings, patterns, and the sophisticated ways the products are made. Besides, traditional craft villages are valuable resources for both the tourism industry and for the local economy.

In order to preserve and spread the appreciation for the unique beauty of craft villages and their products, the Young Change Makers project of VinUniversity has launched a painting mini-contest with the theme of “Spreading the beauty of traditional products/craft villages”. The awarded works will be selected for the cover of 10,000 printed notebooks to be gifted to students across the country in the upcoming school year 2021-2022.

MINI-CONTEST DETAILS:
A painting of a traditional product or of the craft village where it is made (for example, Chu Dau pottery, or Chu Dau pottery village) with a description of about 300 words to introduce to tourists about this product and village:

  • Introduction of the painting
  • Introduction of the craft village
  • Introduction to the product
  • The author’s call for the craft village’s development

CONTESTANTS:

  • Teenagers aged 15-25

FORMS OF EXPRESSION:

  • Hand-painted on A4 size (210mm x 297mm), using materials and colors of the contestant’s choice, then scanned/photographed.
    Digital paintings in JPEG file (*JPG) or PNG format, minimum size of 2000 pixels x 2000 pixels.

CONTESTANTS’ BENEFITS

  • Contributing to spreading traditional culture and enhancing the local economy
  • 30 selected paintings will:
    Get selected to be the cover of the notebook with the author officially credited.
    Earn the contest’s award certificate.
    If you are a candidate applying to VinUniversity, you will be directly admitted to the interview round. The contest results are recognized as part of the AACC (Outstanding Ability, Aspiration, Creativity, and Commitment) qualities that VinUniversity looks for.
    The selected works will be awarded with the prize of the contest.

RESULT ANNOUNCEMENT

The contest has received the attention and support from a large number of young people from more than 50 high schools and universities of 23 provinces and cities across the country, with rich and diverse works from materials to content. Many unique craft villages and products were included in the contest entries, such as wooden handicraft products from Thai Yen Carpentry Village, ceramics from Chu Dau Pottery Village, Doi Tam Village drums, Lang Chuong conical hats, and silk. Van Phuc village, Lang Vong nuggets… show the creativity, talent and above all the love and interest of young people in preserving the beauty of traditional Vietnamese craft villages.

With the criteria on the aesthetics of the paintings, the unique attractiveness of the introduction and the call, the contest organizers would like to announce the results as follows:

First Prize: The work “Conical poem in the land of dreams” by Nguyen Hong Nhi, Hung Vuong High School for the Gifted, Binh Duong

Second Prize: “Traditions of Pottery Making” by Nguyen Lam Chi, Vo Van Tan Secondary School, HCMC

The third prize:

– The work “Sacred sound” by Tran Ly Phuong Hoa, Mac Dinh Chi High School, HCMC

– The work “Standing” by Doan Gia Phuong Nghi, Gifted High School, Binh Duong
